This idea was stupid, you knew it was, but your stubbornness wasn’t gonna let you refuse. You stared at the toy sitting in a hidden zipper in your purse as you remember the conversation you had with your boyfriend the night before. “You should wear your vibe during Hellfire tomorrow.” He had said nonchalantly while revising his notes for the next day. “What?!” You practically yelled in response, “how about fuck no you perv”

Your reaction caused Eddie to laugh, “Why not? It’d be funny.” “Only to you! I’d like to not scar our fellow club members, thank you very much.” You shook your head, still appalled by Eddie’s suggestion. “They wouldn’t even know about it.” Eddie looked up from his notes with a smirk, “unless you’re admitting you wouldn’t be able to keep it together.”

You let out a small gasp “I can so keep it together. Are you challenging me, Munson?” “I might be” he responded smoothly, “I guess we’ll just have to see tomorrow.”

And now here you were in one of the stalls in the girls’ bathroom eyeing the vibrator you snuck into school. Soon the shadow starts to grow larger and larger until the source of it fully emerges: an adult green dragon! Do you stay and fight or will you flee?”

The group talked amongst themselves for a moment, arguing whether to take their chances battling or not. Arguments were made for both sides but in the end it came down to your decision to break the stalemate.

Since your roll was on the lower side you were one of the last attackers.

When your turn came around you decided to try and stun the opponent. 11, just barely missed. “Aw cr- FUCK!” Your mini disappointed outburst was interrupted by the pulsing inside you increasing drastically. You took a deep breath and quickly added “I was this close.” to explain your outburst. As the rest of the group diverted their attention to the next attacker in line, you shot a glare at Eddie.

He placed his chin on his clasped hands as he grinned at you like the cat that got the cream. You mouthed a ‘fuck you!’ to him and he softly chuckled, giving you a wink. A few more turns and it was the opponent’s turn. Eddie had it direct an attack at you in which you had to try and block. 2. Even though you were disappointed with the attack hitting, you were relieved with the dying vibrations inside you.

You figured out the pattern at this point. Eddie was matching the level of vibrations with what you rolled, making what would be a wanted high roll into a despised torture. At least you were more prepared with what to expect with each roll.

After a couple more rounds of the battle the opponent was almost down. You were one of the final members remaining and the only one who could successfully land a killing blow this turn. If you missed or rolled too low, it could be game over for you guys.

“Come on, Y/N! You got this!” Gareth encouraged. “Yeah, don’t let us down!” Mike added. You gave your d20 a lucky blow of air before rattling it between your hands for a moment and throwing it down. Everyone at the table watched intensely as it rolled around in front of you. After what seemed like an obnoxiously long time the die stopped: 19.

The whole group erupted in cheers as Eddie knocked over the figure. You jumped out of your seat in celebration with the others and reaching out to give everyone high fives. But as soon as your excitement started it was soon cut short as the strongest vibrations you felt the whole session blasted through you. Your hands dropped to the edge of the table as you gripped it, trying to keep yourself from falling over.

Hear me out: Self-sustaining Alhaitham

He heals himself with the BP Black Sword plus Ocean-Hued Clam.

I'm talking about yet another uncommon, non-meta, build. Like, when I was first building Alhaitham and Kaveh, I was gunning for Deepwood pieces to start, but the Gilded part of the domain was being a little too generous; Alhaitham kept dying when he was on-field. But then I thought, what if I make him heal himself. Bennett's burst wasn't enough, and Shinobu is practically only used for hyperbloom, never mind healing.

Healer Alhaitham would only heal himself, but that just means he'd be alive longer to cause more damage, and you can add more buffer/off-field damage dealers to the team. He could still have the basic bitch build.¹ The healer build is plausible with the Blacksword from Battle Pass² and either Ocean-Hued Clam or Song of Days Past.³ Basically, have a high Crit rate if you use Clam to keep getting those Black Sword heals and OHC will cause extra damage.

I don't intend on testing this build myself any time soon because I have a Geo and a Freeze team on the way. But this'll be a little project that I do in the future.

¹ "Basic bitch" being the phrase I use for the generic DPS build ([stat %] sands, Element/Phy dmg goblet, & Crit circlet).

² Blacksword at R5, "Increases DMG dealt by Normal and Charged Attacks by 40%. Additionally, regenerates 100% of ATK as HP when Normal and Charged Attacks score a CRIT Hit. This effect can occur once every 5s."

³ Both of these sets also cause a little bit of damage based upon the healing amount from the character. It just depends on WHEN you want that damage to take place. OHC will deal damage every 3 seconds based on 90% of the accumulated healing. SoDP will deal extra damage based on 8% of healing about every 6 seconds on top of all your regular attacks. That's too my understanding of the lengthy ass descriptions.

I just recently graduated as an MFA Photography Student at Ulster University, now that I'm free to practice whichever way I want, I want to resume practicing street photography and macro. I bought this camera both as a y2k trend keepsake but also for fun practice as I do not have any DSLRs on hand anymore atm. Personally, I enjoy finding 'old' or nostalgic items I've never used before to see how far I can push my style preference on more limited cameras.

And due to the y2k trend, this seemed the perfect way to experiment. I was too little most of the time to own a compact camera and didn't see the point in owning one since we always have our cells on hand, but I've been feeling nostalgic this past year for tech I never got to try in the past and wanted to push myself outside my comfort zone for a piece of equipment that's easy to have on hand at all times or at a moment's notice without looking too obvious. My camera doesn't technically count as early y2k tech but it's vintage to me lol. And I wanted to recreate a similar vibe for me.

I'm honestly surprised I managed to find one at such a decent price (£43 ebay) at the peak of this trend. And for a solid colour camera no less. It came near mint-condition, with all of its battery chargers and a newish battery. I'm new to this but I still happened to notice that in the West, compact cameras typically come in standard black, silver, and reds. I'm in the U.K. atm, so perhaps that's why it was easier to come across a solid purple one. WAY prettier colours are available in Japan 😭. I want to keep collecting unique colour models but it's such a pain to find sellers who sell the camera with all of its battery equipment.

Kuki Shinobu Gameplay Analysis

Yesterday we got our first chance to play with Kuki Shinobu and see what she can do. Here are my thoughts...

Shinobu in isolation is not a very powerful character. I don’t think anyone was expecting her to be. Her abilities don’t do very much damage, she suffers from having split scaling for her abilities (having both HP and Elemental Mastery scaling), and as a healer she’s nothing too special. Where her strength lies, in my opinion, is her uniqueness and the potential ways she can support her team.

Support Capabilities

As Genshin Impact’s first Electro healer, Shinobu provides role compression for teams that just want an Electro character for utility, such as certain Eula teams. Shinobu allows you to consistently trigger Superconduct and frees up space in the team by also filling the healer role. This can potentially increase team DPS by letting you slot in other powerful damage dealers instead of a healer.

Shinobu’s healing is also surprisingly powerful. I did say that she was nothing special, but the truth is that her rate of healing is quite high, and the only reason I say she’s nothing special is that most other healers already heal enough as-is. However, she heals more often than many other healers and also doesn’t restrict you to an AoE to provide healing. Adding to this is her high healing uptime (80% without Constellation levels, theoretical 100% with Constellation level 2), which means you won’t be stuck without healing for very long.

For the sake of comparison, Barbara’s Elemental Skill lasts a few seconds longer than Shinobu’s (without Constellation level 2), but has more than double the cooldown, and it applies Hydro to the active character which can be detrimental especially when facing Cryo-wielding enemies. Qiqi’s Elemental Skill is similar, with the same duration and lengthy cooldown that Barbara suffers from.

Shinobu’s Elemental Skill is also adept at generating Elemental Particles, which is an often overlooked and useful feature of character abilities. This means she can very effectively perform as a battery for characters like Beidou and Miko who can deal a lot of damage but need lots of energy in order to do so. She will also be naturally more effective at this when paired with a second Electro character due to the effects of Electro resonance.

Should you invest in Elemental Mastery?

It depends. The power of Elemental Mastery on Electro characters has been tested but the results are none too stellar. For characters like Beidou and Fischl who are meant to deal damage, they get a lot more out of just boosting ATK and DMG Bonus. However, for someone like Shinobu, whose damaging capabilities are really weak to begin with, boosting Elemental Mastery can constitute a much bigger increase in damage output for her.

You shouldn’t invest in the stat just to take advantage of her Passive Talent that boosts the healing and damage of her Elemental Skill, though. While 75% and 25% seem like they’d be huge buffs, know that what they actually translate to is a flat additive bonus which is quite pathetic.

Supposing you have 500 or so Elemental Mastery on your Shinobu, which constitutes a substantial investment in the stat though not 100% by any means, you’d be increasing the damage of your already weak Elemental Skill by just 125 points and your healing by 375 points. And in the case of the latter you’d be better off investing in HP.

So unfortunately, this Passive Talent is practically worthless, but as I said before, that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth investing in Elemental Mastery. The Talent just shouldn’t be your incentive for doing so. Without investment in the stat, the Overload and Electro-Charged reactions both do a nice bit of extra damage, but a few hundred points of Elemental Mastery can massively boost these numbers.

All that being said, I’m still unsure if Elemental Mastery is the way to go on Shinobu. It will need some testing, and there’s also the issue of the reaction damage being influenced only by the character who triggers the reaction. This means that to take advantage of Elemental Mastery, Shinobu has to be the one triggering the reaction, which is not guaranteed to happen and may be quite difficult depending on the characters she is partied with.

Conclusion

While she doesn’t leave much of a mark on Genshin Impact due to her weak damaging capabilities, Shinobu does have some unique strengths that make her a worthwhile addition to the game and open new doors as far as team possibilities go. She’s one of the best healers the game has to offer, even if she doesn’t have the raw power that Bennett and Kokomi do. Her ability to facilitate reactions and generate energy for the team likewise lends her a ton of utility and makes her pair well with some of the game’s strongest characters.

Whether or not she can significantly add to a team’s overall damage remains to be seen, but for now I think I can safely say that Shinobu has a lot of potential and that she is very likely to grow in strength and usefulness with future characters.

GENSHIN IMPACT ASK GAME

1. Who did you choose as your traveler?

KONG / AETHER ! Pretty much because I prefer to play male characters. Since he is a blank slate, I personally picture mine as a kind, calm, very self reflecting, “on the verge of breaking but my mission and love for the person I yearn for (in this case his sister) keeps me going I have literally no other option” hero type, much like, let's say, Syaoran in Tsubasa RESERVoir CHROniCLES and Suzaku Kururugi in Code Geass (as they were based on the same type made by CLAMP) and personally prefer depictions of Aether looking like a young man than a young boy. I understand where mihoYo came from with BOTW and appealing to a wider audience with more teenage-looking characters, but you know I'll always be a bit sad that we didn't have the option to look more like an adult like the Honkai Impact male protagonist.

3. Your favorite party?

Casual showcase for friends. I’m a midcore type of player so I always like a good mix of meta and characters I like. I got talked into rolling for Childe even though he’s not necessarily my favorite character, but ended up REALLY liking how he plays he’s so fun. He still doesn’t do as much damage as Physical Zhongli which is pretty cute.

Childe C0 / Zhongli C4 / Bennett C6 / Xiangling C3 Heart of Depth set / 2 Noblesse 2 Gladiator (WIP) / Noblesse Oblige set / Crimson Witch set

Tested both Vaporize and Electro-Charged comp as Childe is... basically a main DPS support and is 100% dependent on either Xiangling and Fischl hahaha and by far I preferred the Vaporize burst damage... plus I get to play two polearm characters (well, technically three ~).

6. The character you have but you never use?

I literally got no use for Razor even if he’s C6 and a genuinely great character to play. Zhongli fill all my physical DPS need, and Razor is an extremely selfish character who cannot be used as sub DPS so... RIP. Lvl 1 forever.

22. Your favorite character’s design and the least one?

My favorite is by far Zhongli. I mean we’ve all seen the man. People who have been following me since the beginning know I cannot shut up about anthropology and history, and with Zhongli mihoYo are hitting the mark in so many places. From the motifs, to the very silhouette, every detail has a reason to be there, and is such a clever and gorgeous mix of modern fashion, but also ancient China emperor robes, and I could go on and on and on. I can’t get tired of looking at this man. The favorite thing about his design to me are his shoes. I LOVE good dress shoes, and Zhongli’s are absolutely beautiful. Just minimalist enough to be classy but with some golden details that mesh perfectly with his outfit, and an elegant shape that complement his curves... I’m in love.

My friends are going to kill me, but my least favorite is Beidou hahahaha. Listen, in itself, I think she’s a beautiful hommage to Madame Zheng, the historical Chinese pirate queen,  with red colors, the smugness, the hairstyle, etc. However, I do find her personally too all over the place to find her looks appealing, despite the characters being very cool. It seems to not commit to a direction unlike the other characters. She’s tomboyish with the top and gloves, but then her hair are long and feminine, it looks like she got short pirate practical clothing but then all of a sudden it’s a long dress... I just find it visually messy. But it is a matter of preference. Really, all characters in Genshin are honestly fantastic, and any serious criticism on visual design is, to me, bad faith nitpicking.

30. Something you like in general.

How mature the storyline and characters are, despite the game being PG. It has darker moments, but is not childishly edgy like many shonen are. All characters are clear, colorful archetypes, yet none act out of the scope of their character personality just for the sake of drama and plot : the writing doesn’t take for granted that the characters, especially the adults, are exceptional individuals, they SHOW it to us. And this is great writing. They are rational and composed, even if their personality can be active and impulsive. Whereas cheap anime writing nowadays tend to just TELL us a character is exceptional without actually showing it to us.

Shadow of the Abyss: Demon Domain Event

A week-long Boss Challenge event. It's pretty much the same as the Sealand recap event - Illusion Boss Trial: Sealand. It serves as a prologue for the next big event that will coincide with the release of the new SSR Taishakuten.

*Important Note: Quite a few noticeable changes have been made to the General skills in the live version of this event. And due to time constraints, this guide cannot be updated to reflect those changes. So please keep this in mind when reading the Skills and Recommended Teams sections.

Bosses:

Exploring the Abyss

Fight a 3 round boss to farm EXP Scrolls needed to upgrade the generals. There are 3 difficulties, costs 6 AP to do and there's no time limit. Can be challenged 20 times per day.

Demonic God Boss Challenges

Fight a boss within a 24 hour period. On every second day, a boss will be available, they can only be challenged 3 times per day, costs 20 AP to do and there's a 3-minute, timer. Despite the 3 challenge limit, there is a practice mode. You can do practice mode as many times as you want but your score for damage dealt will not be recorded and will not count towards ranking. The fight itself is like day 7 of a boss defense/vanquish in super oniou/uber events. In other words, the bosses cannot be KO'd so you're goal is to simply do as much damage as possible within the time limit.

There is guild ranking. Ranking is based on total damage dealt to all the bosses by the top 40 players of a guild.

Generals:

In this event, your onmyouji will be replaced by SP Shuten (days 1-2), SP Ibaraki (days 3-4) and Yorimitsu (days 5-6). They all have 5 skills - a normal attack, a special attack and 3 passives. The skills for SP Shuten and SP Iba are not exactly the same as their regular ones so make sure you read them carefully before using them. Only the passive skills can be swapped out.

Levels and stats are automatically increased by obtaining EXP Scrolls from explore bosses. Skills are upgraded by 1 for every 10 levels. The upgrades are shared with your guild. So to max out the skills, your guild must farm the explore zones to max out their levels.

Levels for the generals are not shared. So when the generals change after day 2 and 4, your guild needs to level them up again.

While your guild's generals are completely unlevelled, it's a safe choice to stick to using the 1st listed team. Other teams may rely on the generals being above level 25.

The following teams are the top ones used on CN test server.

For the first boss, recommend equipping SP Shuten with the 2nd passive and set him to only use normal attacks. Kiyohime's 2-set isn't too important but she does need as much HIT as possible to freeze the Akashita, the boss and 2 other enemies have extremely high RES so don't worry about freezing them. Could also try using Dawn Fairy on her instead. If you don't have SP Tama or Kinnara, then use a strong multi-hit DPS (eg; Takiyasha, Suzuka) with Shadow + tsuchigumo. For CN players who have Nezuko, you can swap Sasori out for her.

The 2nd boss is a netherworld gate type, ie the boss will take very little damage and when all 5 minions are KO'd a new wave of them will be immediately summoned. Recommend equipping SP Iba with the 3rd passive and set him to only use normal attacks. The boss/enemies can hit rather hard, and frequently if you're not careful, so to deal with that you'll need to adjust Enmusubi's soul set/stats. Can do this by giving her Tree Spirit so her heals are stronger and/or giving her more SPD to heal more frequently. Again, for CN players who have Nezuko, you can swap Youkinshi out for her.

The 3rd boss is absolutely annoying. Best way to deal with it is to just abuse Yorimitsu's 3rd passive with the standard 4 Yama Usagi frozen time team or a double Youkinshi team. Keep in mind that with the latter team, it requires you to do a whole lot of targeting so the 2 Youkinshi can constantly give each other new turns. Alternatively, you can use the SP Ootake team instead. SP Ootake is used solely to prevent the boss/enemies from co-oping.

There's also a 3rd possible team for the 3rd boss - the 2nd passive + SP Yamakaze + Shiranui team. This team has a few soul set/stat requirements; SPD-HP-HP Soul Edge or Soultaker set with as much SPD as possible for SP Yamakaze, a broken set crit DMG set with full crit for Shiranui, a SPD-HP-HP Dawn Fairy or Soultaker set with +100 SPD for Kachou, +100 SPD for both Ushi and Kosode. SP Yamakaze, Kachou and Yorimitsu should all be set to use normal attacks.

it’s been like four years coming, but now announcing the next adventure i will embarking on after college: i’m really excited to share that I accepted a full-time software engineering position at Stripe! (a mid-sized company focused on payment platforms, responsible for a large portion of e-commerce, chances are that if you’ve ever bought something on the internet, your money’s probably gone through Stripe) If you thought that this blog would die after I graduated, you were wrong haha you cannot get rid of my shit content

How it happened

The past few months have been a lot of interviewing (read: a lot), a lot of leetcoding, and a lot of managing timelines and emails. I actually haven’t slept through the night since like September because of my anxiety levels (which is really bad!!!!) so I’m really glad that this whole thing is over. My application season started in mid- to late- August: I had a goal of applying to one company every day, and I kept that up for a couple weeks. Going in, I kind of had a plan of what kind of companies I wanted to apply to - I was planning on taking my return offer originally, but I wanted a few more potential offers to have negotiation leverage when the time came, and I also wanted to see what was out there too. A couple places also reached out to me, so I followed up with them. All in all, I ended up pursuing 10 companies across big tech, a couple unicorns, and some finance firms.

Interview Hell

I have this grand idea of writing a really in-depth guide to how to do interviews + how to find internships + how to handle the system because there are a lot of weird tips and tricks that make it a thousand times easier to get a job, but only if you’re in the know (which is really dumb, as the industry is still pretty gate-keepy). But until then, I’ll just talk about what the interview process was like after this. So I heard back from a lot of those companies asking for what we call “online assessments”, which are basically timed coding tests where you have to code a solution to problem(s) in some x number of minutes or hours. These questions range from coding merge sort to coding a recursive dynamic programming solution to some optimization problem. A lot of companies send these out to everyone and then resume screen, and some might resume screen and then send these out. I admittedly didn’t prepare too much for these, I got pretty lucky and knew how to do most of the problems based off of the years of practice I’d had already (turns out coding every day for like 3 years is actually really good practice already).

A couple companies skipped ahead to the first round phone interview stage. After the online assessments, I got a wave of several first round interview requests, which are usually over the phone for an hour. One of them was a Karat interview, which is some third party, unbiased interview company, and all I remember from this was trying gauge how I did from the body language of my interviewer’s tiny Zoom screen, and I could tell absolutely nothing. It was nerve-wracking. One phone interview lasted for 20 minutes out of the hour it was supposed to take, and I thought I had failed on the spot. I did actually leetcode in preparation for these problems, and most of them ended up being easy - medium questions, usually simple applications with tricky twists, like implementing certain data structures from scratch with O(1) runtime methods. Most of these were early-mid September, squeezed into hour-long breaks in my day.

Final Round Hell

After all these, I ended up moving forward in all of those interviews to the final round, which are usually series of 3-4 video interviews, back to back, usually technical in nature. I thought the one hour phone screens were rough, but this was a real test of stamina. This is also where timing got really tricky for me, because I was trying to time my interviews such that any offers I got would align together in as much of an overlapping window as possible, so that I could negotiate offers a lot easier and see all my options at once.

Preparation for this was also hell - it was a lot of Leetcoding, a lot of interview research online, a lot of going over my stories. I vary between three main stories for all the possible behavioral questions people could ask me: the nonprofit project Amplify that my friends and I worked on, my intro CS class final project, and my previous internship project. In the end though, it was a Lot of leetcoding, I learned so much about graphs and searches and backtracking and DP, I cannot even tell you. I haven’t thought about topological sort since 2017. And somehow, some way, it actually came up in one of my interviews, and WOW i knocked that one out of the park.

My Stripe final round was actually one of the first ones I had way back in mid-September. It was four interviews back to back, three technical, and one more behavioral. I remember feeling generally confident, but not 100% afterwards, mostly just exhausted. Most of my on-sites were in early-mid October - I think I had six days of final interviews over 2 weeks, so I was literally about to pass out at all times. I was really looking forward to travelling this semester too for final rounds (I would’ve gone to New York, Chicago, SF/Bay, Detroit ..... sad). I also had several calls with career centers, people from different companies, recruiters, other info sessions, etc. I started out wearing nice clothes, but in the end, it was over for me - I was in sweats and a tshirt. In this two week period, I was lucky enough to grab a few offers - my return offer, but also a few offers from other companies, including Stripe, whom, at this point, I had given up all hope on, since they told me in late September that they wouldn’t know whether they’d have a spot for me. I remember getting the call back while picnicking with my friends, absolutely shocked I was in the position that I was.

Decision Sweat

At the end of the day, from the places I interviewed with, I ended up getting official offers from 5 places (1 of them being my return offer), 1 tentative offer (I think they ghosted me though because my deadline was too soon), 1 ghost (again, my deadline was too soon so I think they gave up on me), and 1 reject (that one was a really rough interview).

Let me be clear - I hate decision making. I am really bad with any sort of decisions. This process was worse than my college application decision. I’ll make a separate post in about a month or so detailing why I made the decision I made to go to Stripe instead of back to Google, but broadly it was because I wanted to try something new and take risks. It was a really hard decision because my last internship was really awesome and I loved the team I worked on, but ultimately the lack of a guarantee of returning to that team and the allure of working at a new place was too much to overcome. I talked about this every day with my friends and family and mentors, I made a whole decision matrix, but at the end of the day, I did end up flipping a coin on Facetime. Stripe was tails, and the coin flipped tails, and then I screamed and went to sleep. so that was that

I really have to thank the people in my life for bearing with me during this period - I think I must’ve been really obnoxious with how much I was talking about it, but I’m glad that they were there to hear me out every time I flipped my decision. And more generally, my friends and family were the reason I got through MIT, and did all the cool things that I talked about in my interviews and pushed me to learn and strive for the best. And most importantly, they’re the ones who celebrate my interests and accomplishments and push me to try new things.
